We’ve come to that exciting time of year where we start planning our goals and actions for next year. What’s on your list? Is one your to-do items to set up a sales and marketing forecast for the upcoming year?  

Like almost every business owner I know, I want to prepare for 2025 by whipping out my crystal ball and determining where I need to focus to reach my target revenue and profit numbers. And I want to do it without working myself into an early grave! 

Figuring out how to grow your business is easier said than done. Which sales and marketing efforts will reap rewards? We can so easily get distracted and head down rabbit holes that will cause more stress than success. 

How the Sweet Spot method can help you have the best year ever

One of the tools I have used since becoming a Pumpkin Plan Certified Strategist is the Sweet Spot method. I pull it out when I’m digging into planning and forecasting for the coming year. I find that it helps me to step outside the trees and take a look at the forest around me.  

The Sweet Spot helps me identify where I want to be. First, I want to focus my efforts on my best clients. Next, I want them to receive a service that is uniquely suited to their goals. Finally, I want to deliver it in a way that my team can systematize.  

When these 3 opportunities meet and overlap, everything comes together and clicks. We can easily attract more clients who need exactly what we offer. We can work with them in a way that will help them grow. We’re able to provide a workflow that keeps my team humming and happily delivering on client commitments.

Get out of the survival trap

There are many days in the life of a business owner spent in a survival trap. We get caught up managing crisis after crisis, instead of having a plan and staying on a path to the business we always imagined for ourselves. 

Leveraging the Sweet Spot to Business Growth means I can clearly see how to lean into the right clients. It lets me shift to a place where we can focus on sustainable growth so that the business can run like a well-oiled machine. 

Here’s some very fun a powerful math for you. Did you know that if you increase revenue of the top 20% of your clients by just 25%, you can replace the revenue that came in from the bottom 80% of your clients?! This absolutely blew my mind when I figured it out! 

The Sweet Spot: a Case Study

Let’s see the numbers in action from a fully fictitious company .

Tito’s Top Shelf Technology sells handmade packages of IT service, support, and cybersecurity.  Find the perfect cocktail of technology for your small business! 

  • Annual Sales Income:  $850,000 
  • Number of recurring revenue clients:  70 
  • Applying the 80/20 rule, 80% of the profit comes from just 20% of clients. $680,000 of our annual revenue comes from 14 of our 70 clients for an average monthly sale to our top 14 clients of $4050/Month/Client. 
  • If we take the top 14 clients and increase our sales to them by just 25%, that means $170,000 of new sales from the same 14 clients. That’s an average upsell of about $1,000/Month per client.   
  • We could replace the bottom 80% of our clients and still earn the same revenue, $850,000. We could get rid of 56 of the worst clients!   
  • Result:  80% lower client count = same or better profit!  WOWZA!  

Imagine what your life would look like if you got yourself intimately familiar with the needs and wants of the top 20% of your clients and catered to their needs and wants. Clarify what your top clients want and provide it, and you can get rid of the clients causing you pain!
