22 Aug Embracing Freedom: How to experience the world while running your business
When I first started my own marketing and design business, one of my main goals was to be able to travel without leaving my work behind. I wanted the freedom to explore the world, learn about other cultures and meet new people, all while still running my business from my laptop.
This summer, my dream became a reality! Over 15 weeks, I traveled to 15 different countries. I made new friends, met fellow travelers and forged business connections. I experienced the food, drinks, and traditions of communities across the globe. I learned a ton about myself. All while continuing to successfully run my own business. And you can do it too!
Can I work and travel at the same time?
In recent years, a remarkable shift in the way we work has taken place, giving rise to the concept of the digital nomad lifestyle. It’s a way of living that offers the ultimate blend of work and travel, empowering individuals to break free from the confines of a traditional office and embrace a world of adventure while still excelling in their professional endeavors.
But you don’t have to embrace the full “digital nomad” lifestyle in order to enjoy the benefits of traveling while you work. The beauty of having flexibility around your work is that you have the ability to do what works best for you! There are also many options when it comes to destination and accommodations that can make travel affordable. If you’re interested in traveling while working, I recommend you start with a small trip first.
The benefits of traveling while working remotely
Working on your own terms means you have the freedom and flexibility to explore and understand what really works best for you. When you’re not bound to a rigid 9-5 schedule, you may discover that you’re actually most productive early in the morning or later at night.
When you can work around your peak productivity hours and personalize your work setup to your specific needs, you may realize that you’re actually more productive! I found that I was so inspired by my surroundings and conversations that I was more motivated than ever to start and complete work projects.
When managed effectively, traveling while working provides built-in work-life balance. You will learn to prioritize and allocate your time for work, exploration, and relaxation. While this may take some time to perfect, being intentional about this balance will have lasting benefits when it comes to avoiding stress and burnout.
Lastly, traveling while working offers ample opportunities for enrichment in your personal and professional life. You’ll likely find yourself stepping out of your comfort zone, which leads to growth. You’ll meet new people and explore new places, which will naturally expand your view of the world–and there’s a good chance you’ll pick up or enhance some skills along the way. Not to mention the networking opportunities that could arise!
Five tips I’ve found are helpful for successful remote work
